Aromatics in Black Clinique Eau De Parfum 3.4
Sweet69 11/24/21 21:24
This is so good and I layer this with few other vanilla scents I own. It's so good. Great winter scent and it lingers a creamy soft spice wave but not in a dirty way but in a smooth way. This is a keeper of history for sure , and I think it's so classy .
echurch1979 09/18/21 21:58
Clinique has certainly found refuge in my heart as being a supplier of unforgettable scents. Even if some seemed ahead of their time, others defined it. Happy, for instance, took part in defining the upcoming millennium with bold uncompromising optimism. Calyx blew open the doors for a future full of gluttonous gourmands. And Aromatics Elixir redefined gender rolls with an arguably masculine herbal chypre, marketed for women ready to embrace the strength of equality. Speaking to the latter's remarkably wonderful, and genuinely unapproachable iconic status, I was understandably hesitant in acknowledging two new (semi)flankers. Let's be honest, the industry has gotten so astray with flanker scents, that it's hard not to become dizzy from the spinning wheel of capitalism. Extraordinary scents are being dragged down ever thinning trails promising the next "great" thing. No one ever said you could please everyone, but perfume companies are hell bent on trying. Ultimately, the sense of generic apathy smothers any enthusiasm, and no one ends feeling well for it.
Despite the odds stacked against success, misgivings soon subsided with the first soft spray of Aromatics in White, and I knew then I would soon be here to discuss its sibling.
Aromatics in Black does not disappoint. Although notes listed imply a radiance within, I found it otherwise. Like its predecessors, the opening commands attention, setting the scene soon to be played out. And since the opening causes such division, it seems completely appropriate to start there.
Myrrh and vetiver form an earthy dustiness, like strolling through the desert at night. An open abyss of stars above begin to absorb radiating heat from below. Gentle breezes stir the fever nestled in the sand, and sensually suggestive jasmine and osmanthus begin to sift the soil into a fine talc - resin resting along every surface exposed to this elemental shift. As dark chords of night consume solar perfusion, bright points of grapefruit and bergamot punctuate the sky, offering their citric luminosity. Each bright tone refracting just enough to define dark spaces; caressing free outlines among the night's horizon. Fruitful blossoms of orange and plum offer a warm subtle sweetness, and brief respite from the approaching nocturnal chill frosting the barren landscape. I but the passenger, slink back in surrender, while a peaceful powderiness confines what is left my adventure.
zind 08/11/21 03:37
Aw, I really wish the opening worked for me, as I LOVE the resinous, slightly soapy drydown. My impression is the same as hobbygal below. I am not familier with osmanthus, could that be the note that bothers me? Whatever rubs me the wrong way lasts a good hour before slowly fading away, but what I am left with afterwards is utterly gorgeous!!
Hobbygal 07/23/21 21:37
Not bad overall but the opening has this pretty unpleasant "green" note, not sure what it is. If I can get through the initial phase, it eventually becomes a very dense, deep, dark, rich, spicy, and floral concoction. If the challenging opening would go away and the middle and base notes can be thinned out just a smidge to allow more air to lift it, it would have been so much better. A good quality product for the price though.
s2jkbrad 02/15/21 14:33
This smells rich, spicy and like pralines on me. I love it.
churinl 01/23/21 09:21
Like Jae, I was first introduced to Aromatics in Black courtesy of the lovely Anamandy. I was intrigued enough to purchase a full bottle given how inexpensive it is, and wore it once or twice while the weather was still warm. I liked it, but it got pushed towards the back of my collection as new fragrances found their ways onto my shelves. I am wearing her today, full throttle, and very happy with how I smell!! The initial grapefruit note is a bit jarring to me, but it quickly recedes and blends in, providing a spot of unexpected brightness in a fragrance labeled "in Black"!
This is all about myrrh and jasmine on my skin, and I love that as they are two of my favorite notes. The other players, especially the osmanthus and Tonka are detectable, lending a smidgen of apricot-like fruit from the former, and rich depth from the latter. I think it provides a nice tension between light and dark, depth and airiness, and floral delicacy with mysterious resins!
I'm very happy to have taken her out for her first full test drive. The weather definitely made a difference! I'm toying with layering it with a spritz of Narciso Poudre at some point, but for today, she stands alone. Well done, and in my opinion a fairly safe blind buy as it manages to stand out without being too demanding.
Luckyed 12/27/20 11:18
Often spicy jasmine scents are syrupy sweet but this is arid, yes there is the sweetness of plums but it is not like plum jam it is fresh and the wood is dry and smoky like wood burning in a fire. The vanilla tonka dry down is soft and comforting but the spice lingers making it a grown up scent.
I don't like AE or Aromatics in White but this is beautiful.
jæ 11/04/20 18:50
The second fragrance I'm reviewing tonight that was recommended to me by Anamandy! Thank you again. I am a huge fan of the original Aromatics Elixir, but hadn't tried any of the flankers. This one enchanted me immediately.
The progression is so clear and intriguing. First, there's a crisp, cool greenness of osmanthus, whose tart qualities pair perfectly with the plum in all its juicy sweetness and with the acidic grapefruit up top. Then, there's some delicate spice, as well as a really light, pretty jasmine to round it out. The plum gets deeper and darker, and then we transition to the tonka and myrrh, which respectively bring a nice pungent powder and a deliciously soapy resin. It's not listed among the notes, but I swear that I can smell the ghost of patchouli here. That may just be me fondly remembering the original, though.
All in all, Aromatics in Black is fun but contemplative, expansive but sincere. She's the friend who gets along with everybody, but never lets you forget that you're her best friend, in her quiet, mischievous way. This needs warm body heat and ambient chill to bloom and project properly. Otherwise, versatile in terms of occasion and ambiance. A very pleasant surprise.
MiniMena 10/12/20 07:29
Crisp green opening. The jasmine and Tonka stay on into the middle and the fragrance dries into a soft cloud of creamy, spiciness. It is nice for casual wear, possibly even good for wearing to work. Its different but quite likeable. Longevity and projection are moderate, though on clothes it lasts a long time. Great blind buy! Really enjoying it.
Deutsch100 07/29/20 15:03
I just got my new, sealed bottle of Aromatics in Black and I do not know why it is called "Black" and how Myrrh and Tonka Bean are listed as the dominate notes. This is like pure white flower and Jasmine on me. If you like strong florals and jasmine...you will love this. I am so disappointed.
bintTapputi 07/26/20 18:45
This is pretty good for what it is and for the cost of a full bottle. It's like a powdery amber on my skin. Really mild and understated, but pleasant and inoffensive at the same time. 6/10
rola.asad 01/27/20 23:48
Update:
Aromatics in Black, I remember I bought this fragrance more than a year ago. First I didn't like it at all, but when it settled down I went back to the shop and bought it immediately!! but back then I didn't use it that much!
So at the beginning of this winter, I lined up all the heavy-wintery fragrances (like Addict-Dior, Van Cleef, and others) that I would like to use during these cold months and again AB wasn't included. So once I tried it for no reason, aaaaaand I stayed confused during its life-cycle, I was like did I spray Dior-Addict on myself, I'm smelling Dior-addict!!, a boozy- vanilla floral (white flowers to be more precise), a dark yet comforting scent, really classy, sensuous, and at the same time has a vintage vibe.
It reminds me of a bunch of fragrances the ones I've mentioned above (Dior-addict and Van Cleef) are nearly identical, the other ones were Tresor by Lancome which shares the same sharpness of its floral notes, and finally Alien with its Jasmine, and more precisely Alien Essence Absolue.
A Great Journey,, Love.
lollipopsneeze 12/28/19 18:11
I bought this blind for a discounted price and loved it. I can't believe it doesn't have black licorice as a note, all I smell is black licorice, tonka bean or vanilla, paired with what I thought was frankincense and myrrh. It's strange on me, and it doesn't really change. I doubt I would buy it again, the original is still my favorite.
AnitaHendricks 12/22/19 02:45
Vetiver, neroli, myrhh, and tonka bean are the strongest notes on my skin. This perfume is more herbal and light than I expected it to be! It's a nice, wearable blend trough the colder months.
Anamandy 11/21/19 21:59
This was the first flanker of the Elixir line that I purchased. A deep, warm, and comforting scent with a hint of sweetness from the tonka to balance out the myrrh. Amazing silage and longevity too. When I wear this many people often tell me how great I smell and ask me what I am wearing. It is fabulous this time of year.
I just recently purchased the white version. Creamy, and cleaner than this version and more floral, but just as comforting. Silage and longevity less than the black version though, but not by much.
These scents are like aromatherapy for me and maybe that's what Clinique was aiming for when they named this line Elixir. According to Webster's dictionary "an elixir is a magical or medicinal potion" as in "an elixir guaranteed to induce love." Well, if that was Clinique's intention, they certainly succeeded, because both scents have become instant loves for me.
africanabrit 11/16/19 01:19
I bought this because its been compared to dior fragrances and I've had a few and loved them. I only buy them occasionally though because of the price.
I love the dark glass bottle here and I do think this is a dark perfume. Heavy, heady, long lasting, yes medicinal, but still recognisable as a perfume. This does last and yes I do understand the slight comparison to hypnotic poison.
This isn't the cheapest out there, but I will re buy it when I fancy it.
I was initially put off clinique fragrances as happy is the first ever perfume that I tried that hated me. It smelt truly vile, like cat urine, which is a shame as I've complimented so many others when they've worn it.
Thank you clinique for creating something I can wear
Cathped 11/09/19 10:28
This one is pleasant and useable both day and night, work and free time. It is special. I like the sleek design of the bottle very much, it's so elegant and classy. I cant decide whether I want this or not, if it's a like or a love. But it surely appeals to me, and I find it a very unique and good scent. I usually dont like jasmin much, but this perfume is my kind of jasmin.
shawn_c_g 08/29/19 18:17
I tried this as a man on a warm summer day and I have to say, this is gorgeous. The lovely flowers float on top of a warm base. Nothing too heavy. I think I may layer this on top of a darker leather fragrance and see how it goes.
Beeflower 08/29/19 04:30
Light oriental and much Exotic sent! Love it and i feel the myrrh and the Black cherry. Love it but the longevity is poor... 2-3hours the most...
smellsbells 08/24/19 16:45
Very creamy!!would like a bottle of anyone has one to swap!!pm me
sugar&spice 08/23/19 09:24
Testing this today, I find Aromatics in Black to be creamy, sensuous and sweetly-spiced: a balance of masculine/feminine with a hint of something gourmand; the overall effect being really pleasant. I'm reminded of the fresh floral-spicy style of Versace Crystal Noir, but without the odd drydown that happens on my skin with VCN. Aromatics in Black gets a thumbs up from me!
joliecat 06/23/19 08:57
I have many many perfumes made with myrrh. Myrrh is one of my most favorite notes, so I couldn't wait to order Aromatics in Black. To my great surprise, this fragrance is extremely masculine on my skin. I cannot wear it. Tried layering it with feminine scents, but the strong masculine aspect of Aromatics in Black still overpowers intensely on my skin.
After many tries, in different weather, different seasons, and many many attempts at layering, I finally gave my bottle away to a male friend. Aromatics in Black smells great on him, as if he was born to wear it. Definitely made for the modern macho alpha male.
kati77 04/29/19 05:00
It's a really interesting scent. Warm....and warmth is coming not from vanilla but resinous and myrrh and it has a depth.
To autumn and winter really good one.
missryan 03/30/19 09:39
I like it but I find it quite heavy at first. I'm not so good at identifying individual notes yet but I feel like all I can smell here initially are the plum and myrrh, I can't pick up any of the citrus notes. Will be interesting to see how it dries down.
mirrorghost 01/19/19 16:16
this starts off quite lovely. i think i get mostly plum, grapefruit and tonka. it's warm and opulent. it reminds me of something i can't quite place. it gives me a similar feeling to natori perfume but is subtler and not so floral. after being on the skin a bit, the myrrh and osmanthus comes through and now the scent is just gorgeous. on me, the highlights definitely seem to be plum, tonka and florals.
alicia.burrus 01/08/19 11:00
I picked this up at TJMaxx a gift set for $12! I really like the scent it's not wimpy and childish it's got spunk like me. It's blended well. This was a great blind buy.
Mellifluous16 12/03/18 04:10
I love this parfum! I think it is initially quite powdery at first but settles onto something I liken to a 'velvet' and mysterious scent. On me. Gorgeous.
prettyswag 10/19/18 20:27
I really like this , have a lil mini bottle from samples and this is really nice and good for a classic fall scent. I never tried the elixr version but LOVE this much more than the soapy white one. It lingers a really nice drydown and its almost unisex. I can see the Mugular Alien tone in it but thats only in first few mins and I hate ALIEN. This is what i wish Alien could of been in a toned down exotic way but this is yummy.
Soofiya 09/10/18 01:51
It was a blindbuy.a very risky one.the word "green scent" in other reviews freaked me out and I dislike any leafy note in perfumes,I thought it's going to be unisex or even masculine and I was afraid of it's vetiver note.still I couldn't wait to try it.It was one of my best blindbuys as we have a masterpiece here!
it's nothing like my imaginations,it's totally feminine and while being sophisticated enough for adults,it's not overly serious, there's something very charming and seductive here.
If it didn't come in a black bottle I wouldn't think of the color black when I smell it but now I don't find it's name and color too much irrelevent, white florals appear in a darkish naughty way here but if you need leather, masculine woods, animalic notes or lots of smoke to think of a black scent, you'll find it irrelevent to the word "black"
When I first sprayed it an almost Alien-ish jasmine and something sweet and almost jammy fruity similar to a mix of apricot ,some plum and something like clementine? were the first things that came to my mind
After a while it's sweetness mellows and most of it's fruity undertone is replaced by soft creamy florals.I can really detect jasmine, osmanthus and something like orange flower.so this is a real floral scent but I don't find it's flowers old or heavy.Clinique Aromatics in Black's floral accord is devine and gorgeous, well balanced by sweet, sparkly fruits, vetiver's green, earthy undertone, powder(something like a non-gourmand vanilla powder) and slightly smokey myrrh (on my skin, vetiver and myrrh show up in drydown)so it opens as a delicious, slightly spicy, balmy floralfruity, settles down to a creamy, slightly powdery floral-vanilla and dries down to a slightly smokey, slightly earthy woodyfloral
There's a lot going on here.it's far from a simple, boring and generic perfume but it's so well put together that it's complexity doesn't feel too much
Sometimes it reminds me Ted Lapidus White Soul,a complex yet easy to wear blend of creamy florals, resineous, smokey notes(in TLWS we have labdanum, amber and benzoin instead of myrrh and tonka)sweet fruits and powder.not that they're dupes but it's the closest thing that comes to my mind
Lets come back to Aromatics in Black.I don't have the famous classic,Aromatics Elixir so I can't compare them but I have Aromatics in White, which I like but don't love as much as the black one,and to my nose, these two have nothing in common.just that they're both well done and high quality
Clinique is one of my favorite skincare brands but TBH I didn't expect to find such an awesome perfume in this brand.it can compete and easily beat my favorite Diors,Chanels and Yvessaintlaurents.
I was so lucky to find an absolute love in a blindbuy.it will have a place among my top thirty favorites
I agree that it's a cold weather perfume, wearable in both days and nights (mostly nights). It lasts +7 hours on my skin and while not being very heavy, has decent sillage.it's a new member of my collection but I've already received a few compliments on it.my husbands called it a bit fruity, all in all better sister of Alien Essence Absolue and our local drugstore's pharmacist told me:your perfume is amazing.very deep and sexy and she asked it's name to buy it for herself
I even love it's simple yet elegant bottle
I bought a 3.4 oz bottle for 100$ which was a good deal comparing to other perfume shops.so yes,it's expensive here but it worthes every penny
9.75/10
I would give it a 10 if it was a bit cheaper and if it's vetiver was toned down a bit or was replaced by some other kind of woodyness for example cashmere wood
Highly recommended
sibaraa 09/08/18 09:43
A powdery vanilic fragrance. Has a vintage vibe to it. Very similar to all designer perfumes out there. As for the myrhh, it's not there, for me at least, since i'm very familiar with that note, i can detect from miles away. I don't smell any citrus either. All vanilic from the tonka! It's a pass for me.....Luckily it was just a sample.
M.r 08/30/18 17:50
Both of aromatics white and black have that night- ish kind of feel in them.
This one is more luminous than the white one to me. I can sense sparkling orange blossom and crunchy tonka bean.
It reminds me somehow Alien from Mugler, which I am not a fan of. Except this one doesn't take so much place in the room.
Some people might define it as sexy. I don't think so. But "in Black" is deeper and brighter.
I have to admit that Clinique did a great job! Both of them are full of contrasts. I would wear them as a man! It is not an "in your face" kind of smell and I like the fact you can mix them with the original! Plus, the price point is ok.
"White" is dark and "Black" is bright.
Abicor 08/14/18 09:08
Poison dior version light!Nice
samlovefragrance 06/29/18 23:24
Delightful creamy, slightly fruity, slightly balmy, a bit dark and not too sweet. The hint of citrus followed by myrrh is glorious with the osmanthus and white floral vibe, a casual relaxed "fatal" scent. A hint of blackcurrant/plum peaks through at times. When Poison or even Black Orchid is too much, Aromatics in black is an easier to reach for sensual dark fragrance.
scent: 8/10
longevity: 6/10
sillage: 6/10
perfinya 06/22/18 12:15
This perfume has literally everything I asked for! It's seductive, mysterious, bold yet modern and elegant. Energetic plums and heart-warming Italian bergamot takes attention and makes an unforgettable impression.
P.S. I think Aromatics in Black is more attractive than Aromatics in White.
Longevity - 9/10(8+ hours)
Silage/Projection - 9/10
Weather - best in Winter/Autumn
Age - 20+
Scent - 10/10
Price/Performance - 10/10
Holli 06/20/18 22:02
This is a sweet antihero fragrance. So dark, cozy and seductive but in a casual, not trying too hard way. Totally agree with the idea that Jareth smells of this. It's heavy and plush but quirky and charming. Most exciting find in a while. Now I need to try the other flankers!
dsmercoco 05/29/18 13:32
Sublime perfection! Omgosh, its so sexy and sophisticated. I smell the bergmot and pepper, the vetiver. I can pick out juicy plum. Maybe its the myrrh that is putting it over the top... in a very good way. Wow, as soon as the sample is gone and if I'm still in love. I'll rock my very own bottle. Swoon worthy.
mollymish 04/26/18 20:53
To me this is everything Bvlgari Black and Jasmin Noir failed to be. It is more like Jasmin Noir. It is stronger and longer lasting. At first, it doesn't remind me of either of them, however after half an hour, I get similarities to Jasmin Noir.
After an hour it turns musky and has a slight similarity to
aromatics White.
Has no similarity whatsoever to the original Aromatics Elixir.
This will replace my Bvlgari black and Jasmin Noir, which I am currently selling Decants of on ebay.
Gabler 03/29/18 03:31
Surprise! A black bottle full of white flowers - who would have thought it? Jasmine, osmanthus & Seville orange /enriched with smoky myrrh/ play the central role, that´s right. But that´s not all. This floral whirl obtains a delicious flavor of dark plum jelly & vanilla aroma /that is getting more woody & herbal in the drydown/. This perfume is sweet, creamy & it has got an enjoyable gourmand undertone. And that´s the way I like it.
rola.asad 03/27/18 19:36
Well!! This scent is really confusing, first of the beginning: I didn't like it at all, then at the second stage the scent starts to remind me of a kind of soap I usually find at some hotels which composes from the "myrhh' note mixed with some jasmine, and finally, the dry down is the part that I enjoy the most: heavy, deep, bold, mysterious, unique, and sensual!
In the beginning, I didn't like it! But it has grown on me, and now I really respect this piece of art, I can say I'm so satisfied, and happy to have it!
A fact about Clinique fragrances: "they need time", they can easily make me jump from: disslike==> to like==> and sometimes to love!!
Thiago Alves 03/02/18 02:51
I can see why people say that it has a misterious aura, it's dark and addictive
It's not so complex how I imagined, I smelled some leather in the drydown, which it's not included in the notes
artificiosa 02/06/18 18:40
I chose to buy Clinique "Aromatics in black" instead of another Tom Ford "Velvet Orchid", just to switch things up, and if compared, they are on that same darkly mysterious, yet warm side, which is my preference for colder months.
I got most use out of this only in autumn which seems like the only suitable time of the year to wear it.
To sum up - nice try, but wouldn't repurchase.
Annekevn 02/04/18 04:32
Settles into what seems like Hugo deep red and then after about 2 hours smells like a cheap drugstore perfume.
smalltownbeatnik 02/01/18 11:24
My 19 year old daughter said this perfume smells what she imagines Jareth (David Bowie) in Labyrinth smells like. That's probably my favorite perfume review ever.
Venusia 02/01/18 01:07
The notes are great, only after the first 5 minutes undefinable loud blast, comes a beautiful phase with flowers, myrrh and olive leaves which lasts exactly 30 minutes on my skin. The drydown is longer but a skinscent of sweet vanilla. Nothing interesting. Such a pitty! I had big hopes seeing the notes.
Gwenhwyfar 01/24/18 15:22
I've been testing this one almost for two months now and I just can't wrap my mind (or my sense of smell) around it. The notes sound perfect, I like the very initial spritz of it, but then the more it settles and develops the less I like it. It's becoming sweeter and sweeter the more it lingers. I don't know what it is, maybe it's myrrh or maybe osmanthus, but there is something so obnoxiously sweet about this scent, that it's kinda difficult to tolerate after a while even for a gourmand lover like me. Not syrupy type of sweet, but more like resinous incensy overly sweet scent.
I don't sense much in terms of green notes here, like somebody who compared it in their reviews to CK Truth. To me it's just resinous and suffocatingly sweet.
kristamb 01/08/18 11:07
I really like this perfume. It is dark without being too dark. It is white floral without being overly floral. It reminds me very much of an indie perfume I used to have from Alkemia called Lettre D'Amour. Lettre D'Amour also had notes of jasmine and neroli and amber. This is a very wearable perfume and stays pretty close to the skin, too. I think it's pretty...reminds me of a floriental type fragrance. I have so many perfumes, I may not buy a full bottle of this, but I will definitely use my whole sample vial.
nhledger 12/16/17 14:22
tested this today at the Myer counter along with the original aromatics (which is gorgeous). didn't know what to expect but was very surprised this was so far from the original. still a gorgeous scent. i wasn't sure what i could smell, i think my senses were confused! the sales lady said it was sandalwood but i see there is none listed in the notes. i suspect it was actually the myrhh. i could also smell vanilla which i guess was the tonka. it's a warm spicy and still quite aromatic scent but after a while decided it wasn't so different from a number of others on the market. I suppose the original is not so different either from various chypre florals out there, but really who cares....i can't get enough of them! aromatics in black is a lovely fragrance but not on my Xmas list.
indigo 11/23/17 04:30
I got this for my birthday. It's a warm dark cosy sweet floriental. I'm not going to pretend I can dissect the notes for Aromatics in Black - because tbh I cant ! lol I recognise some white florals & I can pick up on the vetiver.. It's very (almost too) sweet when it first hits my skin, but not in a cotton candy/gourmand way. Within a few minutes, the sweetness diminishes quite a lot & it develops a really appealing subtle creamy undertone. I probably wouldn't have bought it myself, but I really like this one a lot & I'm glad I've got it. A fairly "polished" scent, perfect for Autumn & Winter cold dreary days. I think it's quite distinctive & it's the nicest "noir" perfume I've tested from recent releases. Nothing at all like regular Aromatics Elixir either (not that I dislike AE). It's very good (imo) - also the bottle is gorgeous in its' simplicity. BIG thumbs up, nice one Clinique !
Erinbath22 11/21/17 04:33
I am having a rare experience with Aromatics in Black. It's like I can smell a color and texture, and this is deep velvety purple.
Silky, darkly sweet, a smoky plum with a twist of a dry herbal or woody edge. This is resting on a bed of rich liquid resiny sweetness and buttery florals- jasmine and osmanthus are in tandem but not loud in any way. To my nose this is a perfect blend and one of the best of its type that I've smelled. It is so rich that I have to be in a certain mood to wear it.
It reminds me of (but doesn't smell like) Dior Poison for its dark purple vibe, Dior Addict for its warm sweet richness, and Alien for its other-worldly jasmine/amber and just a twist of something you can't explain. Though its character reminds me of these, it is softer.
My family instantly commented on how beautiful this is. I am so impressed!
So there you have it. It is a real beauty and I feel lucky to have found it.
- P.s. Fragrantica, who is the nose?
joe70062 11/18/17 05:57
After the first spray, I couldn't place where I had smelled this before. Then I realized...Estee Lauder Private Collection. The opening is very similar. Go figure, since both companies are owned by Lauder. This only lasts for a few minutes. It dries down into a warm, soft and clean floral. There's powder involved, but not baby powder. A woody appearance makes it mysterious. It's a safe option for those who play along the edges of serious dark perfume. Good stuff!!!
1blondeangel 11/16/17 16:00
Reminiscent of a lighter version of Tom Ford Black Orchid just a touch more plummy. I adore this! I was expecting something dark and heavy. What I get is a soft floral fragrance that sits close to the skin, projects well and makes me ask myself what is that delicious smell. It's luxurious and silky on my skin. Longevity is great! Nothing whatsoever like the original....thankfully! And, now I must try the Cherry. I'm hooked on Aromatics in Black!
leila_mic 11/02/17 08:39
Today I wore the other beauty, Aromatics Cherry Black and suddenly had a strange idea ... I layered it with Aromatics in Black
What came out is the perfect perfume for evening - a dark, gothic fragrance to follow me through the hours of darkness ... until the sun rises again
Never thought they match so perfectly together! Great job
Jdbiii 10/31/17 15:43
I haven't seen anyone mention orangeflower which, to my nose, is quite prominent and fairly straightforward. I like it. One squirt lasted eight hours, and I enjoyed it throughout. A bit linear, but no problem if that's your thing.
missk 09/06/17 23:34
Aromatics In Black is one of the best flankers I have tried in recent years. It shares nothing in common with the original Aromatics Elixir, for which I am rather glad, and is different from its previous flanker Aromatics In White.
This flanker is a glorious blend of plum, myrrh, jasmine, grapefruit and tonka bean. The scent pyramid is actually super unique. You'd be hard pressed to find a blend quite so daring.
Surprisingly Aromatics In Black and its mish-mash of notes smells beautiful on my skin. It's like an oriental with a citrusy, effervescent twist. I find it incredibly sexy and warm, the perfect fragrance for Winter and Autumn.
The opening tends to be quite green and sharp with notes of plum tree, grapefruit and osmanthus. It's important to allow this fragrance a chance to settle as the heart and drydown is where the real beauty lies. Myrrh is a wonderful resinous and deep accord, the note that carries this fragrance. The tonka bean in the base adds a creamy, almost vanillic finish to an exciting and unique experience.
I look forward to sampling Aromatics In Black further and am thrilled to see that this fragrance is relatively inexpensive at present.

I tested this and Chergui again, and found that this one lasts longer on my skin, as long as the original AE.
Its a dark, sweet, spicy perfume, its not a loud perfume...
Like the original AE, its comforting, its caresses rather than a hearty hug.....
mapache 08/28/17 12:36
There is a "plummy" aspect to this on first spray...the woody sits underneath, adding a little warmth.I can't discern all the notes...but I will say it is very nice.
I find sillage/longevity is short on my skin also.
There is something about this that keeps me sniffing my arm...lol....so this is a strong "like"...
JacquieDS 08/20/17 02:25
I like this one a lot, its sweet and dark, but very easy to wear.
It doesn't last that long on my skin, maybe skin scent after 2-3hrs, sillage is soft.
But its a lovely scent and I don't mind re-spray often if I was I get it.
However, at the same time, I tested this, I also tested Chergui and that was more exciting and arresting than this one.
So will need test again on its own...
LadeeGee1958 05/24/17 16:57
This scent reminds me of Dior's Hypnotic Poison. I love it.
emyalda 05/13/17 21:40
Where's the myrrh?
At first spray this smells like a crushed leaf mixed with plum juice.
The green dies down a little and I smell some jasmine too but that's about it.
Overall I found it fresh and sweet
rumyana.zlateva.3 04/27/17 05:55
Nice and comforting fragrance. This is my everyday version of Dior Addict.
Mercuria 04/17/17 06:11
I was looking for something warm and spicy, and the salesgirl suggested this one. At first it reminded me of Youth Dew which is one of my favourites. However, after a while the fragrance settled down and became itself. It's not unpleasant, with a predominant slightly sharp top note that reminds me of cloves more than anything, but I don't see myself buying this one any time soon.
chnhjn 03/26/17 11:07
Almost got this for my girlfriend - it was between Feerie and this, and Feerie won. But that's not to say this is a poor scent - it's far from that! The opening is fruity and plummy and gives a slight plasticky vibe that's bearable. But give it about 5 minutes, and the dense myrrh has but well and truly taken over. It remains that way, slightly medicinal, slightly sweet, for the longest time ever, until it takes its leave in the drydown, with the vetiver taking over. It never truly leaves, though, as it hangs on till the last traces of perceptible scent. So addictive. The bottle, too, is a work of art. Best appreciated in cold weather, but try it when it gets hot if you dare.
MBB1111 03/10/17 05:43
I have been wearing this for a week now and LOVE it. Reviews, here and elsewhere, have given lukewarm accolades to this one, and I'm bewildered. Perhaps it is because I am a sucker for warm, resinous scents, so there is bias here.
Black opens with a quick burst of a thick plummy-fruity note that is quite enjoyable. This passes after about 5 minutes when the spice and resin warms up and surfaces. The duration of the scent is a well-balanced, slightly sweet, slightly powdery blend of flower and balsamic notes. I like Clinique's Aromatics Elixir and Estee's Youth Dew but find them too powerful for me to wear, but Aromatics Black wears like I wish the others did. I even ventured 2 sprays in the crook of each elbow and wore it to work. My trusted co-worker could not pick up on it in our shared cubicle space, but later, she commented, "Something smells good." I had just walked by, so I'd like to think it was me :)
Projection: within your personal bubble with 2 sprays
Longevity: 7+ hours with nice wafts
Wear: for the woman who doesn't always want to smell like flowers or likes a bit of complexity to her scent
icysdn 03/02/17 05:51
im sure the others described it a lot better than i would, but take my advice: layer this one with Oriflame's Power Women Edt and the longevity and sillage will be doubled in a gentle way. Power gonna soften the Aromatics in Black in a way making it possible to wear it in daytime and at an office environment for example; and in turn, Aromatics in Black will turn Power edt into something actually useful lol. these two complements each other perfectly in my opinion. the content is similar anyways;)
iamoir 02/10/17 13:38
A soft balsamic perfume with full on jasmine, osmanthus and neroli on top of myrrh.
If for some reason Aromatics Elixir is too...difficult to handle, you can try the Aromatics in Black and the Aromatics in White flanker. I find that they both are quite similar in terms of intensity, both balsamic but different scents. Aromatics in Black Cherry though is not lighter than Aromatics Elixir at all, so beware; test before.
Opens disgustingly, unbearable to the nose. But be patient. It softens as time passes and becomes a full on jasmine-neroli with quite a prominent vetiver. Tonka does not add any serious sweetness, it is just enough. Myrrh is not overwhelming, so anyone who would want to wear a myrrh perfume and is hesitant because most of them are heavy, give Aromatics in Black a shot. Slightly green and sour.
Once it fully develops and settles on the skin, it's a rather soothing, mysterious, hypnotising and a wrist cracker perfume, mainly because of the jasmine-neroli combination, fleshy at times. Strong, oily and sensual. Doesn't remind me anything from the contemporary creations but it doesn't mean that it's an old type of perfume.
In the drydown you will basically have wafts of a safe meaty jasmine, an enchanting myrrh and hints of a detergent neroli. The overall blend is very balanced though. Lasted up to six hours on skin; a fair time in my opinion. Sillage is arm's length. The more it warms up on the skin the better it will project.
A yes from me.
MossyBerry 01/24/17 16:58
For my first few hours of wearing after a blind buy, I think mapache's questions were right. I am finding it tame and pleasant. I say test first if you are expecting a bombshell.
La DameDeNoir 12/13/16 12:37
Dark, majestic, poisonous, magnificent, decadent nocturnal! A true witch potion! Something that Maleficent (the original Maleficent, that is, not the thing they made with Angelina Jolie) could have worn. I love it! Much more daring and coherent that most of the fragances released today with much more noise. A hypnotic elixir of narcotic flowers (being osmanthus the most prominent to my nose), bitter herbs (I am pretty sure there is some galbanum among their ingredients) and dark resins, with hints of leather, smoke and asphalt. A real black perfume, truly goth in soul.
mypersonalharmonics 12/13/16 04:54
This is attractive.
Not dark.
Not similar to Aromatics Elixir at all.
Not sweet or spicy.
It is a clean floral that reminded me (too much) of Calvin Klein's Truth.
Or even Estee Lauder's Pleasures Intense.
Yes, a touch of Alien is ther too somehow.
So, it's all good, but not original.
GREAT bottle ha.
Lucyana 12/08/16 08:46
To me, this has a slightly resemblance with Alien. Maybe from the sweet jasmin note. It's Nice but i dont't love IT.
taboo2287 09/28/16 04:56
wow, clinique hit the jackpot with this one! love from the first sniff and compliments from everyone whenever i am wearing it ;)
Bee-young-ka 08/16/16 15:42
why didn't anybody tell me about this Myrrh gem?
you will be mine.
if you like Sensuous Noir you'll like this.
both are expensive but IMO worth the money.
Happyme2009 08/09/16 17:31
This is the first Clinique perfume I own that I considered worthy of my money . I actually bought it full price and taxes from The Bay. The opening notes sold me the perfume, they are simply gorgeous . The myrth is just stunning here, I cannot really smell bergamot or anything citrusy, it's just fruits and myrth and osmathus. A stunner! The middle phase isn't as good as the beginning, there is a resemblance to Black Opium and others in that family. Finally, after some hours, the scent settles into a clean tonka, woody vanilla, nothing smokey according to my nose.
Overall it is fairly complex and with a gorgeous opening. It feels somewhat oriental , elegant and opulent. It isn't me, because I prefer simpler scents, more nature inspired , but I appreciate the effort someone ( who is the nose ?) put here to create a beautiful offering .
Edit: I never wore it. I was smitten in the store but once at home I somehow neve grabbed it. A big and new bottle is available for swap, be warned, it is very heavy !!! Most likely, if you don't have a night life, and I don't, you'll not have a chance to wear it. Very gorgeous but bombastic.
Tovah 07/30/16 12:01
Possibly Nicolas Beaulieu?
arrowdk 06/16/16 01:19
This perfume was a pleasant surprise.
I bought it for the lovely top and middle notes, especially the osmanthus.
I was expecting that it would last maybe 3 to 4 hours.
Well, at 6 hours I could still smell it, and this morning, after more than 18 hours I could still detect the myrrh note on my arm (with maybe a touch of vanilla). I am quite thrilled with that because it turns out that I am a myrrh fan. of course, at this point I could only sense it very close to the skin, but still, I did not expect the longevity.
This is going to be a great scent for fall through early spring.
Added on June 24, 2016:
I tried layering this over Aromatics Elixir. One spray of AE, followed by one spray of Aromatics in Black. I think it is great. Tomes down the harsher components of AE, but lengthens wear. To my nose it is a seamless mix.
d'odora 06/04/16 04:44
I will still stand by the original (have just ordered the edt and hope it is somewhat toned down to make it a little more acceptable and likeable) I had high hopes for this one as the exotic black bottle and name suggests. The opening note is gorgeous, what is that amazing scent, is it the osmanthus? However this wonderful scent fades off and what is left is an almost plasticky dolly hair chemical smell. Not that I don't like that scent, I used to bury my nose in my dolls' hairs but I don't want to smell like this. I sprayed some on my hair and right now I feel like a walking doll. I'm afraid it's a return to shop for me.
Fluffyandpuffy 05/16/16 12:54
Ends up smelling like Dior Addict for sure. It is nice sweet fruity floral. I really love the white version. This one does not smell dark, more of a deep pink or purple. Although it could if they tweak the ingredients alittle towards the neighborhood of Tom Fords Black Orchid. This ones too powdery and sweet to be "black".
perfumeaddiction 05/05/16 11:05
Fragrantica has been a life saver for me through rough times I love this site and thank you Swap buddie for this fragrance.
What a change from the original Aromatics Elixir. Also a huge difference from Aromatics in white. I adore all three I have had the original for many years. White is a gorgeous patchouli and Black is a gorgeous warm and fuzzy comfort scent. When I sprayed it at first I could not pinpoint the scent it reminded me of. Then I read some of the reviews below and I do agree it smells a lot like Dior Addict. Not a dupe but it's got the same vibe. A very comfortable relaxing and sexy fragrance.
Roses58 04/28/16 14:45
Have owned and loved the original Aromatics Elixer for years. Have now bought Aromatics White - lovely and now Aromatics Black and it is my current favourite.
Cannot list all the fragrances as my nose is not that experienced or clever. I just know that when I spray this beautiful little black potion onto my pulse points, quite liberally is the secret, I come away wearing the baby sister to Elixer - but she is playful, floral, sweet, happy and has people asking - wow what is that fragrance????
I am bewitched - she is a beauty, just needed to learn how to wear her ❤️❤️❤️
shushkin 04/22/16 06:55
I really had no idea of what to expect of this fragrance as comments have been so diverse. It is very nice and an easy to wear fragrance. I love the osmanthus fragrance and there is plenty of it here. Nice combination of fruit and a strong jasmine note act to bolster the normally fleeting osmanthus note. Theyve really cracked it. I do get the myrhh and it does a fine job of extending the longevity. It grounds the fragrance with its non sweet smokiness. Sans myrhh might have lead to a cloying and over sweet creation. I am baffled by the "black" title. Its not black at all. Maybe the myrhh is supposed to be the "black" element?! Its not a weak or overly strong fragrance. I totally agree about it being aromatic. There is something very verdant about it as well which I will put down to the vetiver. I feel as if I have just walked into one of Kew Gardens greenhouses and hit with the smell of various aromatic foliage and fragrant tropical flowers. Id feel happiest wearing this on a summers evening. Moderate sillage and good longevity. A thumbs up from me.
ewanhoozarmy 04/12/16 08:54
Really like this. Drydown smells very similar to that of Lacoste Sensuelle to me.
Rene007 03/23/16 07:23
very light green perfume , smaell like fresh coriander for me with a hint of somthing sweet,
not reflect the black bottle at all
i will pass this one
LizzieDee 03/10/16 13:47
This really reminds me of Dior Addict - similar softness, very similar composition and impact.
gillbert 03/06/16 18:58
by far, one of the best perfume from Clinique. deep, rich sweet, creamy, flowery and bit smoky. it elegance, sexy, sophisticated and professional.
i can say, smell like tiramisu ice cream cake which i do love. perfect for formal dinner, meeting, office-work and valentine day. it last 6-7hours.
Clinique comes out with another level of fragrance which is i have to appreciate their effort. smoky glass is created definitely protecting the liquid from the sun. clever-good job.
Coffee King 02/24/16 06:41
The two Aromatics flankers, white and black are both fantastic. The Black offering is beautiful, appropriately named, the beginning is ultra fruity, blackcurrant and berries, but as it dries down I get the Myrhh and Vetiver. The bottle itself is beautiful, such high quality.
melancholybaby 01/22/16 09:06
After a fruity opening, on my skin this fragrance morphs into sweetness - not cloying, but headache inducing for me. As it develops, I am left with a very light powdery scent with a hint of spices. Won't work for me.
monamonib 01/14/16 03:31
This very elegant perfume one spray stay long for me its deep dark plum thick amber and its powder idont knew but it reminde with loulou casharil

Fruit and licorice. This does not feel like a "black" scent at all. In fact it is quite delicate--not at all the powerful scent I was imagining. Still, I find myself liking it. It smells vaguely like Hypnotic Poison on my skin and has decent projection and sillage. This is not going to win any awards for originality but is likely to inspire compliments, especially in the softened, skin-close drydown phase.
BettyNoir 01/07/16 04:56
I'm afraid I didn't like this very much at all. It's fruitiness overpowers and the plum is very dominant. It was just a faint purply smelling fuzz after an hour and then it disappeared.
Pepsidoodle 12/31/15 15:48
I loved the smell in the bottle, but on my skin it is quickly reduced to powder. Yuk
mirianacellier 12/09/15 01:59
It's like a soft black cashmere sweater... Love it! Although Clinique isn't a brand which outshines with its perfumes, I have to say that both Black and White aromatics are very successful.
StarlaDear 11/26/15 12:45
Maybe it should be called AE Blush, rather than Black.
majagk 11/26/15 00:26
this could go so much more black, dark, yet, it didn't.
it is black soft, if there is category like that.
those notes on harrods site look so much intriguing in theory, i just wish they
had a little more courage to go stronger, after all we all know what kind of monster is original AE...
well, it still is elegant, and not old-lady like, and quite classy and stylish scent.
but being tauer's fan, oooow what could he do with that....
kvan 11/01/15 12:35
I've worn this three times now. I cannot for the life of me smell myrrh or osmanthus, or even vetiver. So weird. On me I get a top note of greenish tart fruit, then a scratchy screechy jasmine (I'm picky about jasmine notes, though, so might be over-sensitive here) alongside woody vanilla. It dries down to woody vanilla, and after 4 hours is gone from my skin. Not smoky, not resinous, not rich, hmmmm.
The texture and intensity of this is totally different from AE White and of course from original AE. This is light and meek. It smells fairly modern to me, but is not innovative nor is it working hard to charm me.
Germany 10/06/15 14:46
I like this a lot. Bought it the other day at the local Clinique counter ! It's warm , resinous and sweet,,,it's a soft creamy and very likeable. I prefer it to the white as the black one is just more oriental and warm . It has a soapy smell to it like a fruity soapy smell.
The white also smells like soap , but more rosy and sharper in my option.
Both are nice , have to go back soon and test white again but for now loving the black !
The black bottle is sleek, simple and beautiful !
I like genny17 s review!
genny17 09/14/15 12:32
Great scent!! It goes on smokey but light, like it isn't dark at all, or dry, or too strong...I was worried it would smell masculine, it doesn't l there is a lightness and mild sweetness in the top a fruitiness, then the heart gets floral, balsamic, and a bit smoky.. There is a certain soapiness about it, but nicely tempered with the Jasmine..but subtle before all.lthis isn't a powerhouse scent, this is rather stylish, classy, but not oldish..feminine, and very refined!!!
Great creation!!
muskymoi 09/10/15 17:16
Very green and plummy at the top. You'd think it would be a gross fruity floral mess but it's quite interesting. It's almost repellant and attractive simultaneously. I don't think this is girly at all. It may confuse the youngsters actually: "What? A sexy grandma? What's that? No. Does not compute..."
The green is gone within moments of spraying and then it's just a simple creamy floral with a meek resemblance to black orchid (very meek). Jasmine is not very pronounced, but it's there. Another creamy floral for my library of fragrance. Like I needed another one, but the heart wants what it wants. No regrets but I fear it may bore me eventually.
Jomoves 09/02/15 16:27
Is already available in Sydney, Australia. First up, the bottle looks great - nice and heavy with a rose gold sprayer. Feels dark and expensive. Unfortunately, the juice is nothing special at first, but does become a bit special after a couple of hours.
Begins with a very sweet, soapy/powdery black cherry scent. At this point I would say it smells very mich like an "exotic" shampoo. It then calms down and the powdery notes start to take over and it takes on sweet incense vibe. Nothing special, the only thing that sets it apart is the powdery notes that are normally associated with old school fragrances.
After a couple of hours it becomes a low key, almost masculine fruity/musky scent that hangs around for quite a long time.
To sum up, this is like a training fragrance for younger perfume fans who want to try something darker but aren't quite ready to give up on their celebrity fruity scents just yet.
samlovefragrance 08/25/15 14:15
@mapache actually it could be quite "black"! the vetiver and myrrh in the base sounds great, & if they are dominant could turn this to a modern day "poison", a dark incensy fruitiness and some jasmine heart:)
JoMurf.com 08/09/15 11:47
Notes listed on Harrods site
Top notes: Bergamot, wild black cherry, white pepper
Middle notes: Jasmine sambac, rose, galbanum
Base notes: Labdanum, cashmeran, amber
mapache 08/05/15 07:10
Sounds very interesting !!
Would love to give it a test.
But why "black" ??? IMO...does not warrant the name black due to the notes....???
